Some Tips on How to Wash Stained Clothes

There’s nothing like putting on a new clothing item and spilling something on it right after. Or, that proud feeling of showing off a brand new rug only for a beloved pet to make their mark on it. But of course, when there’s a will to get a stain out, there’s a way.

  • Oily stain
If you have an oily stain, sprinkle it with cornstarch. Wait for about 10 to 15 minutes, then scrape it off. Dab stains (don’t rub or press hard) with cool water, which will lighten most spots and remove others altogether.
  • Wine stain
If you have a wine stain on your clothing, you can flush it by holding the fabric wrong side up under running cold-water to force the stain out. You can as well mix a solution of oxygen bleach and cool water (or use a product with those ingredients) and soak the entire garment for at least one hour. Then, check the stains and wash as usual.
  • Ink stain
If there is an ink stain, dipping a cotton swab in clear rubbing alcohol and gently lifting the stain from the outside edge is a great idea. Swap swabs as soon as each absorbs the ink.
  • Grease stain
In case of a grease stain on a clothing it is advisable to use a solution of 50% vinegar and 50% water on the stain. Apply liberally and then treat with laundry soap and water. DO NOT put the garment in the dryer until you have seen that the stain is gone. Only after that you can wash the clothing.
  • Urine stain
In this case washing the item with a heavy-duty detergent in the hottest water recommended for the fabric should do the trick. Add one cup of white vinegar to the rinse water to help with odor removal. If the stain is old and the odor is strong, mix a solution of cool water and add two cups white distilled vinegar.
