We are continuing series about dry clean and laundry myths that keep circulating among us. Here is another myth – probably one of the most controversial ones.
Everyone has a favorite denim that she wishes she could wear forever. Once you find your “perfect” pair of jeans you start cherishing it and you wish it never changes its color, shape and fit. The fact is, however, that denim is ever-changing – it changes a little bit after each wear and, particularly, after each wash it can change in a major way. So you start looking for solutions to minimize these transformations.
You might come across really strange recommendations. We will go over these recommendations one-by-one to see which one is more realistic.
Jeans should be hand washed ONLY.
Yes, hand wash is way more graceful to you jeans than machine wash, of course. If you wash them in a washing machine you might end up shrinking them beyond acceptable. There is also the risk of fading. Denim experts recommend that hand washing is one of the best methods to wash since you can control the intensity and temperature of wash and avoid the aggressive spin cycle which can really change the form of your jeans.
You should NEVER wash your jeans!
This is the part of the myth that is the most controversial. The myth partially comes from denim icons, such as the Levi’s CEO Chip Bergh, who declared that he never washes his jeans but very rarely spot cleans them.
This might be true for designer jeans (with some reservations, of course), but does not apply to the regular denim. It is obviously not a good practice to keep your jeans filthy after they have been in contact with food or body fluids. Generally, it is recommended that you wash your denim after wearing them 4-6 times.
But when it comes to raw denim, i.e. unwashed denim, which has not undergone any of the usual washing or pre-shrinking processes, it is a little different. In this case, it is recommended to wash only after the jeans take your body’s forms, i.e. after six months of wear.
So, what’s the perfect solution?
