Common Myths About Clothing Alterations

Most women fall into one of the following categories: ones who have their tailor, and ones who’ve never ventured into the world of clothing alterations. We have written some common myths and secrets about clothing alterations.

1. Size matters, buy the right size

Most of us fluctuate in weight, so having several clothes that fit you whether you’re up or down five pounds is always a good idea. We’ve all been there: you find the perfect dress but it’s two or three sizes too large. You think you’ll get it tailored one day, so you jump at the opportunity and buy it. Then later you wonder if it might be more trouble than it’s worth. Even if the clothes are on sale, it’s not recommended or sometimes even possible to alter anything more than one size. So think twice before buying the wrong size.

2. Alterations take time

If a tailor is really busy, it’s a pretty good sign that they know their stuff and have loyal customers. So, please don’t expect a miracle overnight. The necessary time depends on the item. If it’s something simple, a one or two-week turnaround is possible. For something more complex, more time is needed. If you need an item for a certain event you should always bring it in expecting that it might take a few weeks to get altered. So, alterations can take anywhere from 3-5 days to a week, depending on how busy your tailor is.

3. Do not alter everything you have

You have to be selective about the pieces you get altered. A fabulous shift dress or the perfect pair of jeans are always worth altering, because you’ll wear them to death and feel fabulous while doing so. But trendy, cheaper items aren’t typically worth the time of altering.
